Garage Conversions by RCB Design & Build

A garage conversion is one of the most cost-effective ways to add usable living space to your home without extending the building footprint. Whether you want an extra bedroom, a home office, a playroom, or a gym, RCB Design & Build transforms your single or double garage into a fully insulated, heated, and finished room that meets Building Regulations. We handle every aspect — structural opening infill, damp proof membrane, floor insulation and levelling, wall insulation, electrics, plumbing (if needed), plastering, and decoration. Second-fix materials (flooring, tiles, fixtures) are client-supplied so you choose your own specification.

What We Offer

TYPES OF GARAGE CONV. WE BUILD

01

Single Garage Conversion

02

Double Garage Conversion

Convert a double garage into a larger living space, or divide into two separate rooms such as an office and utility room.

03

Integral Garage Conversion

Common Questions

GARAGE CONV. FAQ

Do I need planning permission for a garage conversion?

In most cases, no. Converting an integral or attached garage to a habitable room is generally permitted development, provided you are not changing the external appearance significantly. Detached garage conversions and properties in conservation areas may need planning permission. We check during the free site visit.

How much does a garage conversion cost?

A single garage conversion typically costs £15,000–£25,000. Double garage conversions range from £25,000–£40,000 depending on the extent of structural work, insulation, and services required. We provide a fixed written quotation after the site visit.

Does a garage conversion need Building Regulations approval?

Yes. All garage conversions require Building Regulations approval to ensure the room meets standards for insulation, ventilation, damp proofing, fire safety, electrics, and structural integrity. We submit the application and manage all inspections on your behalf.

How do you deal with damp in a garage conversion?

We install a damp proof membrane (DPM) across the floor and, where needed, the walls. The floor is insulated and levelled with a new screed or timber floor system. We also ensure adequate ventilation to prevent condensation. This creates a dry, comfortable living space.

How long does a garage conversion take?

A straightforward single garage conversion takes 4–6 weeks. Double garage conversions and projects requiring significant structural work take 6–8 weeks. We provide a detailed programme at estimate stage.
